Busy Isn’t Always Better

I like to relax, especially after a long day of go, go, go… Rest is necessary. My family is always on the go, there’s always a church event to attend, a meal to grab, a movie or concert to see, or a soccer practice to get to. Simply put, we fill up our calendar with ease.

I stop sometimes and think about all of this and ask myself, why do I live my life at this pace? Is it a lack of prioritizing on my part? Is it just the way I am built? Why do so many of us live such busy lives?

Consider this. In today’s society we equate busy with successful. The more we do, the more important we are. I have found myself answering the question, “how are you?” with the word “busy” more and more. Why do we do this? Is it because we believe more is better when it comes to activity? Do we just want to post all the things we do on Facebook to let the world know how important we are?

In Psalm 46: 8-10 the Bible tells us:

Come, behold the works of the LORD,
how He has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
He burns the chariots with fire.
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

Many have heard verse 10a before but when we read this in context “Be still” takes on a different meaning. It seems to be less about a daily “quiet time” and more about a lifestyle.  The scripture tells us its His works and His decisions that makes the world turn. It’s His declaration that He will be exalted among the nations. Our job: Be still. (God is saying,”pay attention”) I think the more we do and the more we go, the more we find our identity in our own actions.  Being captivated as a member of His audience is the instruction I find in this passage.

I am not advocating laziness or some “sit on the couch” Christianity. I simply question our motivation as Christians sometimes. Are we busy doing things that make us look good, or are we so captivated by what He is doing around us that we are spending time at His feet bringing Him glory?

At His feet is where we find our purpose in life. Its where we find peace. Busy isn’t always better. What has God been doing around you? If your answer is general and generic its probably because you haven’t been paying close attention. Ask God to slow you down enough to show you how you fit into what He is doing.

Make your decisions from a “still” perspective and you will find the things you do in life will be bigger than you, and the strength you find to do them will surpass your own. When you fill your calendar with events based on what God is doing you will find all the resources and courage you need to do it all and still find rest.
